How Gum Infection near Springfield, VA Can Become Serious

Do your gums ache? Are they tender, red and swollen? Do they bleed when you brush your teeth? Are they extremely sensitive to hot or cold? If you answered yes to any of those questions, it sounds like you have a gum infection.

Gum infections near Springfield, VA are fairly common. Sooner or later, almost everyone will get one, even if you brush and floss faithfully. The good news is that it’s an easy problem to fix, and it starts with preventive care.

Our recommendation is that you schedule a preventive care visit with us every six months to minimize your risk of gum infection near Springfield, VA and optimize your oral health. If you can’t remember when your last checkup was, the safe play is to assume you’re overdue and schedule your appointment today.

When you come in for your checkup, it will consist of two parts: The exam and our gum infection treatment near Springfield, VA.

The exam portion is self-explanatory. We’ll carefully inspect your mouth, teeth, and gums, which may include taking a few X-rays so we can get a better sense for what’s going on and get a feel for your current level of oral health.

If we find any problems, we’ll give you a full report and work with you to map out a viable treatment plan that will have you back to optimal oral health in no time.

Before we do that though, we’ll carefully remove all the plaque that’s been building up on your teeth since your last checkup, and then we’ll give your teeth a thorough polishing.

Here’s why it matters: Gum infections near Springfield, VA start off as mildly painful annoyances, but if left unchecked, they become much more serious. Eventually, even a minor gum infection will lead to the development of periodontal disease, which is the leading cause of tooth loss among American adults.

As the disease progresses, your gums will begin to recede, exposing the roots of your teeth. Your roots don’t have the benefit of a protective coating of enamel, which makes them more susceptible to developing cavities.

As bad as that sounds, that’s not the worst of it though. The worst of it is the fact that as your gums continue to recede, your roots won’t have enough surface area to firmly attach themselves to, which will ultimately result in massive tooth loss.

At that point, if you don’t want to gum your food to death, you’ll have no other option but to get dentures or implants. Neither option is great. Almost nobody actually likes wearing dentures. They’re incredibly high maintenance and fragile. You’ll wind up having to replace them every year or two. Implants have the advantage of being durable and long-lasting, but they require invasive surgery and most dental insurance plans don’t cover them, which means you’ll pay more out of pocket.

In any case, it doesn’t have to come to that. Just come in for regular checkups and brush and floss at least twice a day, and you’ll go a long way toward minimizing your risk. Of course, we do a lot more than just preventive care checkups. We offer a broad range of services, both general and cosmetic. Here’s a quick overview:

Teeth Whitening Options

Our Zoom! In-Office Treatment

This is the option our patients use most frequently because it’s so fast and convenient. In just one office visit, we can whiten your teeth by up to eight shades! To get comparable results from over the counter products, you’d have to use them for up to two full months. Who has the time for all of that?

The Whitening For Life Program

This program is incredibly popular with do it yourselfers because it’s something you can do from the comfort of home, at your schedule and convenience.

When you sign up for the program, we’ll ask you to come into our office so we can take an impression of your teeth. We’ll use that to create a set of custom dental trays for you in a process that will take about a week. Once we get the trays back from our manufacturer, we’ll ask you to swing back by the office so we can give them to you, along with a tube of our powerful whitening gel and an instruction booklet detailing its use.

After that, you’re all set. The whitening power is in your hands. Even better, as long as you stay current with your preventive care visits, we’ll give you another tube of whitening gel for free, every six months for life, or for as long as you choose to remain in the program.

Our Kor Whitening System

We’ll be quick to say that this option isn’t for everyone. It was designed to deal with the deepest and most persistent stains, so if the other options aren’t giving you the results you want, this one will do the trick.

It works by restoring your teeth’s ability to absorb oxygen, and unlike the other options we’ve talked about so far, its effects are entirely permanent.

Adult Braces Options

The Six Month Smiles Program

The major problem with conventional braces, besides the fact that they’re highly visible, is the fact that they take a very long time to do their work. In fact, it can take up to two years for conventional braces to straighten your teeth. So how do these braces do it so much more quickly?

The secret is this: Your back teeth respond to realignment very slowly. The braces used in the Six Month Smiles program take them out of the equation, focusing only on the teeth people see when you smile. Not only do they do their work much more quickly, but they’re designed to closely match the natural color of your teeth, so you’ll be a whole lot less self-conscious while wearing them.

The Invisalign Program

Invisalign is rapidly becoming our most popular teeth straightening option. They’re not braces at all, but rather, a series of custom fitting caps you wear over your teeth. To create them, we’ll ask you to come into our office so we can take a series of detailed 3D scans of your teeth.

It will take us about a week to use the scans to create the series of caps. Once we get them back from our manufacturer, we’ll ask you to come back into the office for your initial fitting. Then, about every two weeks, we’ll have you come back in to check your progress and when appropriate, give you the next set of caps in the series.

The best part about the program is this: Unlike braces, including the braces used in the Six Month Smiles program, you can put your Invisalign caps in and take them out by yourself. Think about the freedom and flexibility that gives you. If you want to take a night off without wearing your caps, you can do that.
